Our weekly roundup of education technology, workforce technology, and venture capital news.

How AI Will Change Education – AI has the potential to transform education, which is sorely needed due to the stagnation of traditional teaching models despite significant technological advancements in other sectors. AI could revolutionize personalized learning and tutoring, effectively lowering the student-to-teacher ratio and making education more accessible. The future of education may shift towards AI-driven platforms that cater directly to learners and employers, sidestepping bureaucratic hurdles associated with school systems. With the backdrop of a $1.6 trillion U.S. education market ripe for disruption, this article calls attention to the need for innovative business models, such as “education-as-a-benefit” programs sponsored by employers, in order to unlock the potential of AI in supporting learner development and better leveraging educational technology. This insight is particularly relevant for those in the edtech space as they navigate the challenges and opportunities presented by AI advancements.

Gen Z Demands More Paths To Career Success. It’s Time We Listened – As a result of rampant skepticism about the value of traditional college degrees among Gen Z, they are increasingly exploring diverse career pathways beyond higher education, facilitated by a wide range of training options like apprenticeships and certificates. Despite this shift, many young individuals are still confused and overwhelmed by the choices they need to make without any guidance, with a survey from JFF and ASA indicating that one-third of those aged 16 to 24 are uncertain about their career goals. To address this, educators and counselors need to enhance career navigation services and provide clearer information on non-degree pathways, while employers should effectively communicate advancement opportunities in entry-level roles. Collaborative efforts among policymakers, educators, and industries are essential to develop comprehensive support systems that empower students to make informed career decisions, ensuring access to fulfilling job opportunities aligned with their talents and aspirations.

Billions of Dollars for Ed Tech in Schools Are Now in Jeopardy. Here’s Why – A ruling from a federal appeals court has put over $2 billion in annual funding for K-12 broadband connectivity through the E-rate program in jeopardy, declaring the funding mechanism used by the Universal Service Fund (USF) unconstitutional. The ruling, which could significantly impact schools and libraries across the nation, was described as potentially disastrous for those relying on internet access for educational purposes. The E-rate program has been pivotal in ensuring high-speed internet connectivity in the digital age, making it crucial for modern educational needs, including classroom technology and operational systems. If the U.S. Supreme Court upholds this ruling, it could result in diminished funding for essential connectivity services, with advocates warning of severe implications for vulnerable student populations. In response, Congress should address the issue by establishing a new funding mechanism to replace the E-rate program, though this seems unlikely given the current political climate. This situation reinforces the fragility of educational technology funding and highlights the need for political advocacy in the edtech sector.

Navigating The Investment Landscape In Education Technology – There’s no doubt about the transformative impact of technology integration in education, a marked shift from traditional methods to digital platforms accelerated by the Covid-19 pandemic. Educational technology startups, initially seen as supplementary, have become essential for global educational strategies, focusing on personalized learning and accessibility. Key trends include AI-driven adaptive systems and increased engagement through mobile platforms, aiming to address the digital divide and create equitable educational opportunities. Investors are drawn to the education sector for its potential social impact and sustainable business models. Plus, long-term impacts of edtech promise to reshape education by fostering hybrid learning environments while ensuring that technology enhances, rather than detracts from, meaningful educator-student interactions.

We know the importance of technology in education and the impact edtech has on students everywhere. Learn more about our mission and portfolio companies working to measurably improve economic mobility for millions.

Majority of Grads Wish They’d Been Taught AI in College – A recent survey by Cengage Group reveals that a significant majority of college graduates – 70% — believe generative artificial intelligence (AI) tools should be integrated into education. Over half of the respondents felt that their education left them unprepared for the workforce, citing a lack of training in new technologies. This sentiment varied by age, with 61% of Generation Z graduates expressing unease about their generative AI skills. Employers are also concerned, with nearly half anticipating a skills gap in new hires. Despite the challenges, perceptions of the value of higher education have increased, indicating a desire for institutions to equip students with relevant technology skills. The results of the survey highlight the necessity for educational systems to adapt quickly to meet the evolving demands of the job market.

From COVID Learning Loss to Artificial Intelligence, Education R&D Can’t Wait – In order to address long-standing issues within the U.S. education system, there is an urgent need for increased investment in education research and development (R&D). In particular, the learning losses exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic need to be addressed. The authors of this article, former education leaders in Tennessee and Mississippi, argue that substantial improvements in literacy scores in their states were achieved by applying evidence-based research to classroom practices. They advocate for collaboration among educators, researchers, and edtech companies to align R&D efforts with the pressing needs of schools. There is potential for emerging technologies, such as AI, to facilitate personalized learning and improve educational outcomes—provided there is a structured R&D process that prioritizes student needs and involves educators in decision-making. For those in the edtech space, this underscores the importance of bridging the gap between research and practical classroom applications, ensuring that new technologies genuinely support educators and enhance student learning.

Educational Apps Emerge as Top Choice for Kids’ Summer Screen Time Usage According to New Study – A recent study by learning company Lingokids highlights a notable increase in children’s technology usage during summer break, with educational apps emerging as the predominant content accessed. Surveying over 1,000 parents of children aged 2-8, the study found that 68% of children use technology more during vacations, with 66% engaging with educational apps to counteract summer learning loss, a concern for many parents. Additionally, nearly 70% of parents appreciate the advantage of technology allowing them to focus on personal tasks while their children stay engaged. These findings indicate a growing societal acceptance of technology as a beneficial tool for parenting during summer months, highlighting its role in supporting children’s academic and social development.
