How Nexford University Makes Paying for Education Simple with Flutterwave

About Nexford University

Nexford University is redefining higher education for a modern world. Founded in 2019, Nexford is a next-generation online university built to deliver affordable, flexible, and globally relevant learning. The programs are designed in collaboration with leading employers to help learners gain real-world skills that translate into career advancement, without the burden of traditional tuition or outdated degree models.

The Challenge

As Nexford set out to make quality education accessible to anyone with an internet connection, it quickly faced a new kind of payment fragmentation. This becomes a critical hurdle to scale, especially as it attracts students from emerging economies in Africa, where cards are only one of multiple payment methods and are less preferred by most. “How do we make tuition payments as simple as joining a Nexford class?” was a key question. That’s where Flutterwave logs in.

The Solution

  • Payouts & Collections

Choosing Flutterwave was the right decision for Nexford’s mission to make tuition payments seamless for learners everywhere, from Lagos to Johannesburg to Nairobi. By integrating Flutterwave’s payment infrastructure, the institution fast-tracked its expansion, enabling students to pay in their local currencies via cards, bank transfers, or mobile money, all within a few minutes. Similarly, Flutterwave processes payouts for Nexford, allowing it to manage all relevant operational expenses without hassle. Together, Nexford and Flutterwave are removing barriers to education by pairing accessible learning with equally accessible payment systems.

The Outcome

With Flutterwave powering its tuition payments across Africa, Nexford’s number of transactions grew from a few thousand to tens of thousands, recording a compound annual growth rate of about 150% between 2021 and 2024. The total number of student payments received (collections) is almost equally split between cards and alternative payment methods such as mobile money, bank transfers, and account debits. This is another story of how Flutterwave’s payment infrastructure effectively combines both global and local payment methods to give our merchants and their customers an improved payment experience.

By providing the rails for automated reconciliation, seamless and secure transactions, Flutterwave frees up time for the Nexford team to continue leading the charge in redefining how learners experience higher education through personalized learning paths, flexible programs, and a deep commitment to preparing the world for the present and future of work. Now, learners can pay their tuition faster, using their local currencies and preferred payment methods, all without the complications of foreign exchange hurdles.

Fadl Al Tarzi, CEO and Founder at Nexford University, commented on the impact of the collaboration, saying: “At Nexford, we’ve always believed that education should never be limited by where you live or how you pay, and we’ve built our university on that belief. Our mission is to create equal access to world-class learning opportunities, and the acceptance by learners has proven the impact of that vision.

Working with Flutterwave in Africa has supported us in removing the payment barriers for learners, enabling us to take them even closer to their professional and educational goals. As we continue to expand, we’re confident that their payment ecosystem will help us keep innovating and supporting the next generation of global professionals from Africa.”

Good to Know

At Flutterwave, we believe payment is partnership and our collaborations are built for the long haul, meeting merchants’ needs wherever that might, sometimes literally, take us. For example, in 2024, we expanded into “new markets like Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, and Turkey,” a move driven by our commitment to supporting the payment needs of a long-standing partner as they grew.

This is the same level of commitment we have for Nexford and your business. As they grow and serve more learners across emerging markets, Flutterwave’s comprehensive reach ensures their payment needs will be met today and tomorrow. Whether it’s enabling new scholarship models, introducing financing options, or supporting new currencies, Nexford can always count on Flutterwave to make education as easy to pay for as it is to dream of.
