Dr. Mark Milliron Recognized for Helping Pioneer The Application Of Data Science and Design Thinking to Help Students Learn Well and Finish Strong

Dr. Mark D. Milliron, Co-Founder and Chief Learning Officer at Civitas Learning, has been named as one of The Chronicle of Higher Education’s top tech innovators for 2016. Honorees include scholars, administrators, entrepreneurs and students, who are “using technology boldly and broadly to solve problems.”

The first in a family of nine children to receive a college degree, Milliron has forged a distinguished career in higher education with a focus on applying next-generation technologies to solve some of the most significant challenges facing postsecondary education. An award-winning leader, author, and speaker, he has served as a faculty member, university chancellor, foundation and association executive, and an advisor to K-12, college and university leaders nationwide and around the world.

Civitas Learning is a mission-driven education technology company that helps colleges and universities apply data science and design thinking to understand the complex factors that impact student success. As Co-Founder and Chief Learning Officer, he has catalyzed state-of-the-art efforts to help colleges and universities translate data from disparate sources (e.g., ERP, LMS, CRM, card swipe) into insights that power high-impact student success initiatives and create end-to-end student decision support.

“I’ve been blessed to work for and with some of the most inspiring and driven education innovators from the very beginning,” said Milliron when asked to reflect on the recognition. “I’m looking forward to continuing to stir things up with the Civitas Learning team and partner institutions to help many, many more striving students succeed.”

“From our first conversation about how to build out Civitas Learning, my favorite thing about Mark—and probably why we synced so strongly—was that he wasn’t just about the newest fad or coolest technology,” said Charles Thornburgh, Founder and CEO of Civitas Learning. “He wakes up every day completely committed to our mission to help a million more students a year succeed. He brings innovation and expertise to the table that help us get to stronger and faster results.”

Milliron previously served as Deputy Director for Postsecondary Success with the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, founding Chancellor of WGU Texas, and President and CEO of the League for Innovation in the Community College.
