A Game-Changing Partnership: The Temple Health Nursing Scholars Program Transforms RN and CRNA Recruitment

Updated: Dec 4, 2024

What if you could finish your nursing program with minimal debt and a job already lined up? It sounds like a dream—but the Temple Health Nursing Scholars Program is making it a reality.

The initiative, which launched at Temple Health in August, includes RNs and Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetists (CRNAs). Students applying to or enrolled in an RN or CRNA program will be eligible for up to $40,000 of loan sponsorship if they commit to working for Temple Health upon graduation.

“This is a wonderful opportunity for Temple Health and future RNs and CRNAs,” says Chaudron Carter Short, PhD, EdD, RN, NEA-BC, Executive Vice President and Chief Nurse Executive of Temple Health. “Innovative partnerships like these are critical for developing the next generation of nursing professionals, and will help ensure that Temple Health has the highly-skilled workforce we need to succeed for years to come.”

“RNs and CRNAs are key areas of need for Temple, and this will build a reliable, sustainable pipeline for filling those roles,” agrees Samuel Maron, MD, Senior Vice President of University to Employer Initiatives for the Nursing Scholars Program. “If you’re a CRNA or RN, you’ll be able to start your career with less debt and at one of the nation’s top healthcare systems, which has a stellar reputation for the highest-quality care and service to the community. The Temple Health Nursing Scholars Program is structured to set you up for success by getting you engaged in the Temple community before you even start working there full-time.”

Prepared for Success

The Temple Health Nursing Scholars Program is supported in part by a grant from the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. “Pennsylvania has among the highest per-capita nursing shortage rates in the country, and we believe this program can be part of the solution,” Dr. Maron says.

Nursing Scholars, which is a nationwide initiative, launched three years ago, and partners with health systems and nursing schools throughout Pennsylvania. The program is operated by Noodle, the leading technology-enabled strategy and services partner for higher education, which was founded by the creator of the Princeton Review.

“Our team leaders have clinical expertise—Alice Bradshaw, MSN, Nursing Scholars’ Director of Operations, is a Masters-prepared nurse—and we’re always thinking about how to best prepare students to succeed in a healthcare setting,” Dr. Maron says.

“To ensure that Temple Health Nursing Scholars students are ready to work at Temple, we’re partnering directly with the deans of the schools they’ll be attending,” he continues. “We’ll make sure there’s an open line of communication between those students and Temple Health nursing leaders, so they’ll know exactly what they need for when they get here and do onboarding when they’re still at school. We’re also partnering with the Pennsylvania Association of Nurse Anesthetists (PANA) to provide additional sponsorship and educational opportunities for CRNA Nursing Scholars.”

Next Steps on the Nursing Scholars Journey

Anyone applying for or enrolling in a participating RN or CRNA program is eligible for Temple Health Nursing Scholars. Do you know someone who might be interested? Send them this link to the Temple Health Nursing Scholars page.
