Our weekly roundup of education technology, workforce technology, and venture capital news.

This week’s articles collectively highlight the transformative trends in education and workforce technology, underscoring the vast potential for edtech and workforce tech companies to capitalize on innovative solutions that address the evolving needs of learners and employers alike. Read on for this week’s roundup.

New Study Reveals Dismal Student Experiences with Campus Technology, Impacting Enrollment and Retention Decisions – A recent survey by Inside Higher Ed and Collegis Education reveals that students’ interactions with technology significantly influence their decisions to enroll and continue with higher education. According to the study, over 40% of students reported frustrating experiences with campus technology, indicating it could deter them from continuing their education. This highlights a critical opportunity for edtech companies to provide solutions to enhance the user experience and improve retention rates. Key issues cited in the study include difficulties with school websites, frequent delays in online learning platforms, and challenges stemming from digital poverty and inadequate IT support. This presents a valuable prospect for the edtech sector to develop innovative, user-friendly technologies that meet students’ high expectations and address existing gaps in higher education tech operations.

Most community college students plan to get 4-year degrees. Few actually do – This article discusses the challenges community college students face when attempting to transfer to four-year institutions, emphasizing the low success rate of transfers. While community colleges provide crucial access to higher education for a significant portion of U.S. undergraduates, only 13% manage to earn a degree from a four-year school within eight years due to various structural barriers and bureaucratic hurdles. Despite initiatives like streamlined transfer pathways and partnerships between institutions aimed at improving transfer success, many students still encounter problems such as losing credits or receiving outdated information from advisers. For EdTech companies, this presents opportunities for technological solutions to streamline the transfer process, provide students with up-to-date information, and facilitate better communication between community colleges and universities—ultimately enhancing student outcomes and supporting their educational journeys.

Crunch the Numbers—New Data on Edtech Benefits, AI, and Top Educators – The recent NetSupport survey highlights significant insights for the edtech space, emphasizing the importance of effective training and time allocation for educators to fully maximize the benefits of technology in the classroom. With a growing number of edtech tools utilized in schools, the survey shows that while 93% of educators believe these technologies enhance teaching and learning, there is a critical need for increased support, with 54% identifying the necessity for more time to learn and train on technology rather than simply seeking more funding. This calls for a paradigm shift in how districts prioritize and implement edtech currently, advocating for clearer responsibilities among educators, IT staff, and administrators based on well-defined goals. Additionally, the mixed parental opinions on AI in education underline the necessity for schools to address safety and ethical concerns, while programs like the Society for Science’s Advocate Program reinforce the essential role of educators in equipping students for future STEM challenges. As educators navigate the evolving edtech landscape, investing in professional development and clearly establishing roles in technology use will be critical for effective implementation.

How To Turn On-The-Job Training Into An Asset Rather Than A Burden – The importance of on-the-job training (OJT) as a crucial component of workforce technology and employee engagement strategies is growing. This article critiques the outdated mentality of minimal training, highlighting that a significant portion of employees now prioritize OJT over traditional postsecondary education. With a strong demand for skills development directly in the workplace, companies implementing OJT enhance employee retention and satisfaction and foster innovation and productivity. Organizations can better match skills to roles, build loyalty, and maintain a competitive edge in attracting and retaining talent amidst a widening skills gap by adopting a mindset that views employees as learners and integrating OJT into their culture.

Stark Racial, Class Disparities in K-12 Mental Health Linked to Absenteeism – A recent report, A Nation’s Kids at Risk, released last week by the University of Southern California highlights significant disparities in access to in-school mental health support among different demographic groups, revealing that Black and low-income families are less likely to report available mental health services at schools compared to their white and affluent counterparts. The study found that only 29% of Black families and 37% of low-income families have access to such services, yet those groups utilize them more frequently. The report also links higher rates of chronic absenteeism and poor mental health among students, with over one in four children being chronically absent by the end of 2023. Teen girls aged 13-17 exhibited the highest levels of depression and anxiety symptoms, while Black boys showed the most behavioral issues. The findings emphasize the need for targeted policies to improve mental health support access, particularly for the most at-risk youth.

DeVry University Releases “Closing the Gap: Upskilling and Reskilling in an AI Era,” its Report on Learning and Development in the U.S. WorkforceDeVry University’s report, “Closing the Gap: Upskilling and Reskilling in an AI Era,” highlights gaps in employer efforts to provide effective upskilling and reskilling opportunities, despite an increase in employee enthusiasm for learning. Conducted in partnership with Reputation Leaders, the survey of over 1,500 employees and 580 hiring decision-makers shows that while access to skills training has improved, participation remains low, with many workers underestimating their AI skills compared to employer perceptions. The report raises concerns about inequalities, particularly regarding women’s access to AI training, and suggests that without equitable and effective training, organizations may face significant risks as AI continues to transform the job market. Urgent action is needed to align training programs with the evolving needs of the workforce.

Why students leave and how to prevent it: Survey reveals higher ed data practices impacting retention – Recent research from the National Student Clearinghouse Research Center indicates that higher education institutions are experiencing improved student retention rates, largely due to the increased utilization of data analysis to identify risk factors and intervene before students drop out. Factors such as financial hardship, emotional stress, and a lack of belonging significantly impact students’ decisions to leave, but early warning signals like class absences and slipping grades can provide actionable insights for colleges. TouchNet’s collaborative study with Higher Ed Dive found that many schools are now leveraging integrated campus ID systems to track a wide range of student behaviors and experiences, enabling more informed decision-making to enhance engagement and retention. This trend underscores the growing importance of data-driven strategies in the edtech space, as institutions strive to address student needs effectively and proactively.
